What we verify, and how

Four checks, each confirmed at the source

Education verification

Academic qualifications are verified by contacting the institution directly, or through an official clearing house for certain overseas institutions. We confirm the period of attendance, the degree obtained and, where available, additional details such as GPA. Where academic administration staff cannot assist, partial verification may still be possible through Ministry of Education records.

Employment history verification

Employment details are verified with the relevant HR department or, where none exists, with the candidate's last direct supervisor. We confirm employer, designation, dates and employment status, and where possible conduct a basic reference interview, with emphasis on the reason for leaving and whether the candidate followed proper exit formalities. Some company policies limit responses to yes or no answers; where that happens, we say so in the report rather than dress it up.

Professional qualification and licence verification

Professional qualifications, licences and memberships are confirmed with the issuing body or institution directly, including validity and current standing.

Reference (integrity) interviews

Structured interviews with past direct supervisors covering performance, reliability, conduct, reason for leaving, integrity and eligibility for rehire. Referee cooperation is not guaranteed; candidates are encouraged to notify prospective referees in advance, which measurably improves response rates. Where a red flag is disclosed, we endeavour to obtain written confirmation from the institution in question.

What credential checks find

Discrepancies surface more often than you'd expect

Across more than 40,000 individuals screened since 2010, Veris identified discrepancies or concerns in approximately 28% of cases reviewed. The most common credential issues:

40,000+ individuals screened since 2010
~28% of cases reviewed had discrepancies or concerns
  • Falsified academic qualifications: incorrect or fabricated educational credentials
  • Degree-mill certificates: qualifications issued by unaccredited institutions with no legitimate academic standing
  • Fabricated or inflated employment history: inconsistencies in dates, roles or responsibilities, and undisclosed terminations
  • Invalid or expired professional licences presented as current

Verified where the records live

In-country, in-language, at the source

Credential verification is only as good as its access to the source. Veris verifies in-country and in-language: directly with universities and employers across Singapore, Indonesia and the wider region, with Ministry of Education records in Indonesia as a fallback, and with licensing bodies in the relevant jurisdiction.

Where candidates have studied or worked across borders, checks are extended to the jurisdictions where the credential was earned, typically covering the last five to seven years, and reported jurisdiction by jurisdiction.

Consent-based and compliant

Every credential check is conducted with the candidate's signed consent, independently of the hiring decision, and in accordance with data-protection law, including Singapore's PDPA and Indonesia's PDP Law.

Consent-based verification is transparent, fair, and discourages misrepresentation before it reaches your shortlist.

Credential verification is one of the three areas of the Veris screening framework, alongside identity checks and integrity checks. Most clients combine all three in a role-based package through pre-employment screening, delivered and tracked in the VERISChecks platform.

Frequently asked questions

What clients ask before engaging

How is education verified in Indonesia?+
Directly with the issuing institution wherever possible: period of attendance, degree awarded and available detail such as GPA. Where the institution cannot assist, partial verification may be possible through Ministry of Education records. Documents are never accepted at face value.
What if a previous employer no longer exists?+
We attempt verification through the candidate's last direct supervisor, corporate registry records and other lawful sources, and we report clearly what could and could not be verified, so you can weigh the gap rather than guess at it.
How long does credential verification take?+
Most credential checks complete within days to a few weeks, depending on institutional response times and the jurisdictions involved. Progress is visible in real time through VERISChecks.
Can you verify international qualifications?+
Yes. We verify credentials across Asia-Pacific and beyond, using direct institutional contact and official clearing houses for overseas institutions, and we report results jurisdiction by jurisdiction.
Do you need the candidate's permission?+
Yes, always. Every check runs on the candidate's signed consent. This is a defining feature of employee screening at Veris.
